AOP Orphan Pharmaceuticals Announces Approval of TETMODIS® in Europe

VIENNA, August 31st 2010 – AOP Orphan Pharmaceuticals AG, a privately owned pharmaceutical company today announces that its strategic development partner ORPHA DEVEL GmbH has gained marketing authorisation for TETMODIS® (Tetrabenazine) throughout the European Union (EU) under the Decentralized Procedure. TETMODIS® 25mg tablets are approved for the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington's disease. AOP Orphan will commercialise in Central Europe via its own organisation and strategic partners in the rest of the EU

About Huntington's Disease

Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a rare life threatening neurodegenerative disease affecting approximately 30,000 people in Europe. HD causes progressive movement disorders, cognitive dysfunction and behavioral changes. Chorea is the most common symptom, affecting approximately 90% of HD patients. It is characterized by excessive, involuntary and repetitive movements, which are the most visible and dangerous manifestations of HD and interfere with patients' abilities to perform everyday activities. Chorea arises in patients with HD as a result of over-activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine.

About Tetrabenazine

Tetrabenazine (TBZ) is a selective and reversible centrally-acting dopamine depleting drug which inhibits vesicular monoamine transporter2 molecule (VMAT2). TBZ plays a central role in the management of chorea associated with HD. Double blind and long term studies have shown that TBZ has proven symptomatic relief and is an effective treatment of chorea in patients with HD.
