The medical field of neurology specializes in diseases of the nervous system and of the muscles. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Pediatric neurology is a special area in pediatrics dealing with diseases and disorders of the nervous and muscular system of children and adolescents. 

Neurologic diseases have various causes and can be roughly divided into the following groups: headache disorders, vascular diseases of the brain, infectious diseases of the central nervous system, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, diseases of the peripheral nervous system and neuromuscular diseases.

Huntington’s disease

Huntington’s disease is a genetic disorder affecting the central nervous system and which causes the progressive degeneration of brain cells. This leads to the degeneration of motor skills and cognitive abilities, as well as behavioral difficulties.

Rolandic epilepsy

Rolandic epilepsy is a benign form epilepsy which can only be found in children and adolescents. It is characterized by focal seizures that usually occur at night when the patient is sleeping.

Boys are much more susceptible to this than girls.

Agitation is a serious, disruptive and pathological complication of many chronic psychological disorders, such as schizophrenia and mania. There are approximately five million adults in Europe afflicted by psychotic disorders. Agitation is defined by the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” as an “excessive motor activity associated with a feeling of inner tension.”
